Sam had invited Violet over to his apartment so he could cook them dinner. She had never been involved with a man who could cook before. Kevin had been very traditional, and she had always cooked for him. She and Sam werenât officially a couple, but Violet felt they were getting closer to becoming one.
Violet had bought a bottle of white wine at the liquor shop to bring with her. She hoped sheâd chosen a good one, the shop owner said she had, but she didnât know much about wine, and Sam seemed like the kind of person who would know a lot about it.
Samâs apartment was a merely a street away from the pub, so Violet walked there quickly after work. Once again, her mother had agreed to watch Tommy, who was getting suspicious of where she was going to. She had dated men before, before Anton, but Tommy hadnât liked any of the guys as much as he liked Anton, so Violet didnât know how he would react to Sam and didnât believe they should meet yet.
She arrived at Samâs apartment and had to wait for him to let her in downstairs. She heard his voice on the intercom.
âViolet?â
âItâs me,â she said as she waited outside.
âOne moment, Iâll let you in.â
Violet heard the buzzer and opened the door. She stepped inside the lobby and heard someone walking down the stairs and then Sam appeared, greeting her.
âIâm so glad youâre here,â he said, beaming.
âI brought you this,â Violet said, holding up the wine bottle.
Sam took it from her and thanked her. âA great choice,â he said, holding up the bottle, and she smiled.
âCome upstairs,â he said, gesturing for her to walk with him. âDinnerâs all ready. I made two options because I realized I should have asked whether you eat meat.â
âI do, but thanks.â Sam seemed almost too good to be true and she wondered if she should pinch herself or be suspicious of him.
She walked with him upstairs and they entered his apartment. The inside of the building had been plain but inside Samâs apartment was a bit more decorated, with bright furniture, and colorful artwork on the walls, which she didnât know anything about but imagined was quite expensive.
âI like your art,â she said as Sam shut the door.
âThanks.â He smiled, and she was relieved when he didnât ask her whether she knew about the artists.
He didnât appear to have a dining room, but Violet noticed that he had the table set in the living room with a black tablecloth, shining, uniquely shaped crystal glasses and fine, chunky silverware. He already had a bottle of wine on the table and Violet felt foolish sheâd brought one. Sam set her bottle next to his and Violet wondered which one she should drink.
âThereâs pasta with a red sauce and a side of steak or grilled eggplant,â he told her.
âSounds delicious,â she said.
He pulled out a chair for her. âHave a seat.â
Violet sat down and then wondered as he disappeared
