I turn the Orchid’s key. Before I even go in and see what’s inside, I can already smell it. A mixture of mold and body odor and cleaning products—and cheap products at that, I can spot that fake lavender smell from a kilometer away. I take off Chickadee’s shoes, her heels look pretty bad. Then I plug my phone to charge. Have I got any messages from Mr. Cacá and Mrs. Fernanda? Of course not, it’s only eight o’clock, I see on the screen that’s lit up. Two texts from Cacá. I’m about to read them but then stop myself, maybe it’s best to pretend I didn’t see them. I feel a bit guilty, sorry for Mr. Cacá, who’s always so nice to me. But what’s done is done, best to move forward. Especially because I have other stuff I need to do.

I type the Wi-Fi password I find on the nightstand, bigcorn69. I look for the Garcia bus company’s phone number and call them. A man says there are no other buses today, but early tomorrow morning there’s one going to Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo that drives through Presidente Prudente, one hundred and twenty reais for the ticket. I grab my bag, my card. Ana asks if she can watch TV and I say yes, while I read the numbers to the man, the expiration date, hoping we won’t get disconnected in the middle of booking. It works. He says I’ll receive an e-ticket over email and is about to hang up, but I ask him wait a moment, I want to see if I’ve really received it, I’m so scared of spending the money and getting stuck here. While I log into my email, I hear a strange sound, then lots of moaning. I turn around and see Ana sitting on the bed, Bibi on her lap, watching TV. On screen, there’s an anus gaping open and so up close, it looks more like the crater of a volcano. What’s that? Ana asks, pointing at the screen, at a big corn whose head is now rubbing against the folds. Where’s the remote? I start screaming, the moaning starting over again. Our Lady of Aparecida, better the girl go blind than see something like this. I have to grab Cora to find the remote. The buttons are covered in a plastic sleeve, I have to press OFF twice to turn off that disgrace. As soon as the screen goes dark, Ana starts to cry. I want to watch cartoons, she says, her mouth gaping. I think of the other hole, did she realize that was an anus? Better not talk about it, maybe she’ll forget. Then I remember I’m still on a call, the man is waiting, God, I’m so embarrassed, can he hear the TV? I don’t have the nerve to talk to him again. I check if I received the email and hang up on the poor guy. Ana continues crying and repeating the same sentence—kids when they start begging for something, nothing can stop them.
