Dealing with a Slow- or No-Dressing Model
Many toddlers will not dress themselves when prompted, even though they are capable of doing so. Confirm that your toddler has the motor skills necessary to dress himself before proceeding with the following strategy.
[ 1 ] Tell the toddler that he has a set time limit in which to get dressed (10 to 20 minutes), and set a kitchen timer for the appropriate amount of time.
EXPERT TIP: Praise your toddler frequently when establishing and teaching dressing skills. Begin by praising every minor accomplishment—putting an arm through a shirtsleeve, for example—whether the task is done perfectly or not. Focus on praise until your toddler gets the hang of dressing, then correct backward shirts or pants or a shoe on the wrong foot.
