âI donât see how that last part can work,â said Harold, frowning at a cross-sectional drawing of the Lightning Tower. âThe Channeler is too big to extract that way.â
âYouâve never seen it,â said Kef.
âNo. But Gabine said it fills this room.â Harold pointed to a windowless chamber near the top of the Lightning Tower, on the floor under the glass-domed room that crowned the whole structure. âShe was very specific about the size. And as you can see, the roomâs fifty feet wide.â
Kef glanced at Gabine. âDid you see the device?â
âNo. They installed it after I was exiled, the scumbags.â
Kef shrugged. âDonât worry. I know what it looks like, and itâll be easy enough to move around, especially once weâve breached the Tower. Any other objections?â
Sheâd spent the last hour defending the plan from Gabine and Haroldâs critiques. Squine had stayed wordless. Probably too stressed about his role in it all.
âYou trust the aristocrat?â asked Harold.
âI trust his greed. And Iâm planning a visit before the heist. After that, Iâll trust his fear as well. Anything else?â
Their questions annoyed her. None of them knew the first thing about a heist. None of them knew how many years Kef had turned this scheme over in her mind. None of them knew why she was really doing this, either. She planned to keep it like that until the mission finished.
When no one voiced any more annoying questions, she stood, pulling on the ladder to haul her aching body up. âThe cityâs going to be hot today while they search for Harold. Weâll rest up here. When they canât find you, theyâll assume I took you out of Zorith and the heat will ease. Tomorrow, weâll move into position for the heist; weâll need to set up our operations a few hours before Exoranâs party in the evening. Now, grab something to eat and have a rest. Keep as quiet as possible. We donât know when the workers are going to walk overhead. Iâll go on first watch.â
Harold waddled around the walkway to the supply crates, where he set to work dragging spare cloaks over the metal floor to form bedding. Squine dove over the walkwayâs railing, slicing into the water with barely a ripple or splash. He came up a few seconds later, floating on his back, those lidded yellow eyes gazing up at the ceiling. Gabine stayed where she was, watching Kef roll up the drawings.
âThis whole affair reminds me of when I was young,â said Gabine. âWorking in my studio, with my designers and my apprentices ⦠you know, whenever we took in a new apprentice, I could always tell whether theyâd make it, even before I was the boss.â
Kef slipped the drawings into a tube, then handed it to Gabine. âGood thing Iâm not an apprentice.â
âAll of them came into the office saying how much they cared about design,â continued Gabine, like sheâd not even heard Kef. âHow designing boats was all they ever wanted to do with their lives.
