Going Home

Back at my apartment, Matt was waiting for me. I sat on a stool at the kitchen island as we gulped down a slice of cold pizza.

“Why is this so cold?” I asked, tossing my slice back in the cardboard box.

“Sorry, you never called me to say when you’d be here, so I ordered it,” Matt sputtered, darting my gaze.

“You could have at least left me more than two pieces. I haven’t eaten much this week. And now I have to go take care of my parents.” I rubbed the back of my neck as thoughts of kissing Ben filled my mind.

“Sorry, I’ll order another one.” Matts ears were turning red, something they did when he was embarrassed.

“Forget it, I’m not hungry anymore. And quit telling me you’re sorry all the time!”

“I’m so—” His entire face turned a deep solferino color this time as I flashed him an obstinate gaze. We talked very little after the fight. I found my feelings for Ben validated somewhat. Matt knew all I was going through, yet, he had no way to comfort me. I no longer felt guilty about the kiss.

“Do you want me to come with you tonight?” he asked. His voice sounded as cold as the pizza.

“No.” My voice was cool too. “Plus, I’m going to stop by the vet and check on Ginger. And, besides, don’t you have to work tomorrow?” I reminded him.

“Yeah,” he said, chewing his food like a cow.

“I have to jump in the shower and get going. Thanks for coming by.” I stood and pecked him on the cheek.

“You sure you don’t want to lie down and rest a little?”

Translation: have a quickie.

“I don’t have time, Matt,” I said sourly. Standing up, I stormed out of the room. Grabbed an overnight bag, threw some clothes in it and showered. By the time I had returned to the kitchen, Matt had taken off. He managed to leave me a note by the vase. He’d bought me flowers and placed them by my keys. They were beautiful. The aroma they delivered was perfect. There was a bunch of pink carnations, yellow daisies and purple hyacinths. But all I wanted was oranges. The note said he loved me and was sorry for the pain I was going through. I began sobbing. But, it wasn’t from his act of kindness. I was simply spent. And the night had not yet begun.
