An older man dressed in a suit made his way to the stage. He stood in front of the microphone, and the music started to play. It was the song “Summer Nights” from the 1978 movie Grease.

The man wiped the sweat off his brow and began to sing. Although he was trying his best, Jack couldn’t help but think the man sounded like a strangled chicken.

Making his way across the room, Jack walked over to a man making drinks at the bar. He asked the man where he could find the owner of the club.

“There she is,” he said, pointing to a large woman. The older man had finished his song, and this woman was stepping onto the stage.

“That’s Madame Midori,” he said. “One of the best karaoke entertainers in all of Tokyo.”

She grabbed the microphone as another song came on. It was “I Will Survive” by a lady named Gloria Gaynor. Jack had heard his Mum sing it around their house. Madame Midori began to belt out the tune. As she sang, Jack couldn’t believe how good it sounded. The green eye shadow on her lids glistened in the light of the disco ball overhead.
