Chapter 22
The last thing Edie wanted to do the following day when she got in from work was to take Danny and Mary for a walk. Or should she say a training session, because Danny was adamant that he wanted to enter Mary into the rabbit race on the weekend, and he was determined to give his bunny the best chance of winning.
âOK,â she gave in. âBut homework first.â At Dannyâs age, he didnât have a lot, but Edie wanted to instil in him the good practice of getting homework out of the way as soon as he came home, before he started high school and was given loads of it, although that big event was a couple of years away yet. Reluctantly, he got out his literacy book and set to, but very soon she found she was roped in to help.
Eventually, heâd completed what he needed to do for his teacher and was now raring to go, with a rather excited Mary hopping about on the end of the lead. As usual, Edie carried the rabbit until they reached the big field by the river, at which point she placed Mary gently on the ground and allowed her to explore a little before they started her training. The afternoon was warm and sunny, and the scent of the river and recently mown grass hung on the air. A faint breeze ruffled her hair and she was glad she was outside. Although she had a tonne of sewing to do, it would have been a waste to pass this up.
A wide path had been mown into the meadow and trampled by numerous walkers, both with and without dogs, but the rest of the field remained untouched; the soft wind sighed through the long grass and delicate blooms of wildflowers dotted the field. The hum of insects ebbed and flowed as the little creatures went about their business, and every so often Edie batted away one of them when it came too close. The field was also alive with butterflies, and for a little while she and Danny tried to count them, giggling like fools when they failed to get their results to tally again and again.
âPesky critters,â Danny chortled, and Edie wondered where heâd got the expression from. James, maybe? He had certainly given her son an appreciation of wildlife, and she was grateful for it. In a subtle way, James was teaching him science, too, she realised, thinking back to his explanation about flowers and pollination, and about bats and their sonar.
Damn it, there she was, thinking about James again. Was she ever going to get this man out of her head? Did she even want to?
It was only when she and Danny began the training session (although how effective training a rabbit could be, Edie had yet to fathom) that she realised sheâd have to let Mary off the lead. At just over three feet, the length of soft leather was nowhere near long enough to allow Mary a proper run.
