War did not break out immediately with the Confederacy but with another association of Alpine towns called the Three Leagues. It consisted of the League of God’s House, the League of the Ten Jurisdictions, and the Grey League, all of which would later make up the Swiss canton of the Grisons (Graubunden). Like the Swiss Confederacy it was established in resistance to the Habsburgs, and now the region it occupied was vital to Maximilian. In 1499, France’s King Louis XII (r. 1498-1515) conquered Milan as a first step in an invasion of the Italian Peninsula. Maximilian was nominally still King of Italy and was married to Bianca Maria Sforza, who was the niece of the ousted Duke of Milan, Ludovico (r. 1494-1499). Prior to this invasion, Louis had made an agreement with the Swiss Confederacy whereby he gave them hefty subsidies in return for the right to recruit as many Swiss mercenaries as he pleased. Maximilian therefore had to control the canton of the Grisons.
