MARIOTA WAS introduced to many of the Irish noblewomen, as well as a few of their husbands. All had been gracious to welcome her. Christiana appeared to be much loved, but the names, new to Mariota, were now a blur and weariness was setting in.

“They will soon set up the tables for supper,” said Donald. “Would you like to take a walk outside?”

“I would like that very much,” she said, the thought of fresh air appealing.

“Perhaps I might find my husband.” said the fair Christiana, looking around them, “and pry him from his business long enough to do the same.” She walked off toward a group of men.

“I will see you at the evening meal,” Alex told them and headed to where Prior John was speaking with a group of men who looked to be galloglass by their powerful bodies and warrior-like dress. But for his black robes, John could have been one of them.

Taking Donald’s arm, Mariota strolled outside. The breeze had increased, and the late afternoon light had mellowed. Mariota briefly studied her husband’s face. Today, it was clear of any cloud of worry. “You are happy here.”

Donald took a deep breath and let it out, staring beyond Castle Hill to the waters that circled the peninsula. “I suppose I am. It feels like coming home after a long absence. Not home really, but something much deeper. It pleases me we are well received and the lordship desired as an ally and a friend. There may come a time when we will need their support and they will need ours. Lacking strong ties to the Stewarts, notwithstanding his marriage to Princess Margaret, my father bound us to England. I have followed in his footsteps with no regret, believing it is our best course.”

“And England’s king has welcomed you as a brother.”

“I am not so naïve as to think he does so out of his generosity. He sees the English fleeing the Earldom of Ulster in the face of the bold Irish lords, and he wants to secure his lordship. Together with the O’Neills and the Savages, we are his security.”

Sir Thomas came to get them. “My lord, they are sitting down to eat.”

“Very well,” said Donald. Then offering her his arm, he smiled. “You must be tired of nibbling on bread.”
