CHAPTER 11

Mentorship

Figure 11 Managing your employees

Original Art by Chris Redmon, BPES

A great mentor is able to recognize and then inspire the greatness in those whom they are mentoring. It’s not about making someone more like you, it’s about making them the best possible version of themselves.

Get to know your mentee. Inquire about their life outside of work while keeping professional boundaries. This will help provide you with insight as to who they are. It will also let them know that you recognize them as a person not just as a mentee or employee. Ask them to share some information about themselves.

The following are some questions that you can ask them:

What led you into this career?

What do you like about it so far?

What is not your favorite part so far?

What is your story?

What stresses you out?

What is your outlet?

What are your hobbies?

What’s your favorite food?

These are all topics that we all can relate to. It’s a nice opportunity to get you both at a level playing field as humans.

Now that you got to know a little bit about your mentee it’s a perfect time to establishing ground rules. Make it known that these rules are firm and they are not meant to be bent or broken.

For example: In the salon/barbershop industry, it is common for there to be a territorial mindset when it comes to clients seeing another stylist or barber.
