The morning after the conference Will rose early to see Rellan off. Anneka and Rellan had already arrived with their two children, and they stood huddled together. A small party that included the king, Rufe, and Brother Gerome joined Will just before dawn.

The king approached Anneka and Rellan and gravely expressed his thanks to them both, offering his best wishes to Rellan for his journey. They bowed in response, and he moved away to allow Rellan to say his goodbyes.

Anneka held their two-year old daughter, Bella, in her arms. Rellan stood beside her, stomping his feet restlessly as he cradled Bella’s twin brother, Kuper. Neither of the twins were awake. Brother Gerome stood beside them.

Rellan was poised like an arrow ready for release. He was waiting only for the first glimmer of sunrise, determined to set off for Erestor as soon as the light allowed it. He would not be traveling alone. Petar, an exceptional hunter and tracker from Newhaven who was also an unusually capable archer, had agreed to accompany him. Petar waited patiently nearby, holding their horses.

Rellan handed little Kuper to Brother Gerome before briefly embracing Anneka. He then took the reins of his horse from Petar and mounted, turning back once to wave farewell as he rode away.

Anneka, her face a mask, stared after him until long after he had vanished from sight.
