I know I’m being ridiculous, but I go as far as walking Chloe inside and reminding her several times that she needs to stay put until an officer picks her up. On our way in, I told her that today is the day we’ve been waiting for. I kept it at that. The less she knows about the details, the less she’ll worry.

As I expected, Caleb, Zeke, and the rest of the guys assigned to today’s mission are huddled around the table in the main room at the station. Studying the map marked in detail with all the alleys, buildings, exits, and escape routes, I know that Caleb’s leaving nothing to chance.

“There’s a lot at stake today. Our primary concern is making sure Officer Alejandro Perez gets out of there in one piece. We take care of our own.” He points to a team of six men. “Your job is to stay with the truck. Once we have it in our possession, it’s your job to keep it secure until I get there.” He calls out the names of four others and gives them the task of entering through the back of the building and ensuring those exits are covered. Finally, he says, “Damian, myself, O’Reilly, Cavanaugh, Dietrich, we’re going through the front. Zeke holds up in the van until I call for him.”

Everyone nods while we go over it once more.

“Does everyone know their position?” Caleb asks.

“Yeah,” “Let’s do this,” and “Time to bring Hernandez to justice,” are spoken around the room.

“We got less than two hours,” I remind Caleb. “I think we should head out.” This is supposed to happen at noon. The clock is ticking.
