JUST A FEW SUNDAYS AGO, on Harvard Avenue, I saw a teenager, maybe fifteen or sixteen, who had found her answer. She was with her parents. They were short and sturdy-looking, trudging along the sidewalk at a determined healthy pace, but the girl was jogging. At each side street she would turn off, vanish for a while, then return a few minutes later and jog in place alongside them, then come to another side street and jog off again. The girl’s excursions gradually grew longer. Her parents didn’t pay much attention to her, just seemed pleased at each check-in. I crossed to the parents’ side of the street so I could see the girl’s face. I wondered if she was annoyed at having to check in, if she felt like a dog testing its leash. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Each time she returned, her face was radiant. A full beautiful smile—and then she bounded off again.

Was it the pleasure of what she was discovering on her own down the side streets? Or the pleasure of returning and finding her parents just where she expected them? Or the pleasure of alternating between the two? I don’t know. But she’d found her own balance between exploration and familiarity, her own rhythm between venturing off into the unknown and returning with what she’d found—a personal portal between frames which had become part of her own frame for experiencing the world.

She knew how to travel a border.
