Chapter Thirteen

Spyder

When Spyder called Hawk and told him what happened with Charlie, they decided Hawk should stop tailing Wynter from a distance and guard her more closely. Hawk waited until the wedding was over to tell Wynter about her best friend being in a wreck. She didn’t give him time to explain everything. She asked where Charlie was, and as soon as the words were out of his mouth, Wynter jumped in her car and made a beeline for Charlotte’s apartment with Hawk following. Jude was glad Hawk had been there when Wynter arrived to act as a buffer. Wynter wanted to barge into Charlie’s room, but he insisted Charlie needed her rest. Hawk had been the one to convince Wynter to wait a while.

Hawk had also used his Gryphon voice on the female when she began getting upset. Their special brand of coercion wasn’t to be used for monetary gain, nor were they supposed to influence someone into anything personal. Hawk hadn’t abused his power, but Wynter still felt the pull to the male. She relaxed and listened to Roman, and for that, Jude was grateful. When Hawk offered to watch over Wynter that night, she agreed quickly. All the Hounds were used to females flirting, wanting their fifteen minutes with a bad boy. Hawk was already attracted to Wynter, so being her bodyguard wouldn’t be a hardship. If they ended up together? That would be a plus as far as Jude was concerned. Having mates who were best friends would be great in the long run. If not, well, Jude wouldn’t think that far ahead.

Having Hawk watch over Wynter allowed Jude to be alone with Charlie. As much as he wanted to get her naked and do all sorts of kinky things to the female, he wouldn’t risk it until she was healed. He would use their time together to show her his softer, more nurturing side.

Jude allowed his Lion’s eyes to come forth, and Charlotte’s own eyes widened a fraction. The side of her mouth twitched, and she reached out a hand. Jude took it, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles. He took the gesture as her way of saying she accepted him and the others as shifters. Or maybe she just wanted to hold hands. He didn’t mind touching her. Jude might be into kink, but he also enjoyed the simpler aspects of being with someone like holding hands. Snuggling on the sofa. Taking care of their needs if they weren’t able, like throwing together a simple stir fry. To him, being in a relationship was a partnership. He might be dominant in the bedroom or the club, but in other facets of life, he wanted there to be a mutual give and take.

Charlotte was successful. She’d grown her business from the ground up. That took strength, smarts, and determination. She might not be a badass like Maveryck’s mate, Natalia, but Charlotte was strong in her own ways. He had only known her a couple days, but Jude already admired the female and wanted to see where things between them progressed.
