“Who are you talking about? Who’s she?” Avery asked. The boy kept glancing nervously up at the night sky. Whoever this person was, he was genuinely scared of her.

The boy shook his head, tossing a peach stone up into the air and catching it again, as if preparing for another throw. “I’ve told you, get back on your bicycle and go.”

“Avery, maybe we should do as he says…” murmured Low, eyeing the peach stone.

But Avery didn’t move. There was something intriguing about this boy. About this place. Avery gazed at him. “What are you doing here all on your own in the middle of the night?”

“I’m not on my own.” He threw the peach stone to the ground.

Avery and Low exchanged glances. There was certainly no one else around that they could see. Avery turned and walked towards the castle.

“What on earth happened here anyway?”

“Look, you really need to leave,” persisted the boy, striding after her. “She could turn up at any moment.”

Avery paused in front of one of the blackened ruined walls. The fire here must have been an inferno to cause so much damage. She put her hand out and touched the charred stone.

The light around her changed. Avery found herself blinded by bright sunshine and blue skies. There was warmth on her back, but the acrid smell of burning filled her nostrils.

In the distance she could just hear Low calling: “Avery? Oh, for goodness’ sake… Yep, she’s gone again!” Then his voice faded and was replaced by someone else’s.

“We’ve let her down badly, Baba.” A familiar voice spoke beside her. Avery turned to see Ghilli smack his fist into his palm. Next to him stood Baba, and behind them both smoke rose in spirals from the smouldering ruins of the castle. The fire that had destroyed it had only recently been put out.

Avery looked down at her hand, still feeling the night air and the cold stone of the castle wall beneath her fingers. She had touched the casket in the library and then seen Mab about to destroy it. And her fingers had grazed the walls just before she had the vision of Acton and Mab in the tunnel. Her visions must be activated by touch!

“I don’t understand what Avery was doing here anyway,” continued Ghilli, his brow furrowed. “This old castle of the Lammermuirs has been abandoned for years now. Why would she come here?”

“We can’t know. Perhaps she was looking for clues about what happened to them,” Baba replied with a sigh.

“Someone wanted to make Avery’s death here look like an accident, but the evidence all points to it being the very opposite. She thought someone was after her in her first life and nobody believed her. She thought someone was after her again in this second life and still nobody believed her. Now she’s gone again, we must all see the truth. Someone is hunting her through her nine lives! We have to find out who is doing this, Baba, and you know I have my suspicions.
