VERY LITTLE APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY WHEN SOMETHING IS NOT DONE OR FAILS

This tactlessly creates a blame culture, and judgment is applied instantly with the fear of being honest.

There was a situation when the hired coach was initially given a list of tasks and steps of analysis workshop setup. She had completed all but one to a tee and followed a different approach for this last task simply because she had applied her experience to make it a better experience for the team.

While she didn't put the exact steps of how people should be doing the analysis, it was also clear to her that it was not just a good thing but she had already discussed it with the attendees the day before. As the CEO showed up in observation mode that morning, he imprudently called off the workshop and asked that another team leader run it the next day, following his exact instructions this time.

“I had done it because it promotes self‐organization this way, which is why I was hired. Instead, I felt like I was instantly judged for not doing this properly, with no questions at all to understand my point of view. If questions had been discussed, I could have shared the many hours of my time spent creating this better workshop as people panicked when the workshop was called in such urgency last night.” Ms. Coach defended her actions.

“As a coach as well, I would have appreciated that he had asked questions to create a shared understanding and to allow other points of view to be held. We need to be able to create empathy here. We could start by focusing less on the lists of steps and abstract up to the objective level and finally allow the team to fill that space. I have to admit that he didn't really ask me many questions before he came to me and requested that I create this workshop while telling me exactly what to put in it. Where I have challenged, it then turns into what he wants to see. All he seems to want is a tactical solution, for now. While the team is desperately crying out for a strategic direction to anchor all of their focus. The team's engagement has been very low, and the capability to operate against what is asked is an evident struggle, which if he had asked me about, he would be able to understand the reality better.”
