1 High Heaven is not constant in its dispensations:

See how the country is moved to unrest and error!

The people are scattered and men cut off from their fellows.

In the middle of spring the move to the east began.

I left my old home and set off for distant places,

And following the waters of the Jiang and Xia, I travelled into exile.

I passed through the Gate of Chu with a heavy heart:

On the day jia, in the morning, my journey began.

9 As I set out from Ying and left my old ward in the city,

An endless turmoil started in my mind.

And as the oars slowly swept in time,

‘O my Ying, I shall never look on you again!’

I gazed on the high catalpa trees and heaved a heavy sigh,

And the tears in torrents, like winter’s sleet, came down.

We passed the head of the Xia; and once, when we drifted westwards,

I looked back for the Dragon Gate, but I could not see it.
