RoIC also gives a measure of how effective acquisitions have been; most people look at this post-tax, while I prefer to look also at the pre-tax ratio, as this removes the tax rate fluctuations from a trend analysis. I am not sure how important it is to define returns this precisely, as long as you use a consistent method for a company over time and when comparing companies across a sector.

There are a number of other ratios which I look at, including asset turnover – and more will be covered when discussing building the model later – but this is all quite basic analysis. Therefore, I focus below on some of the more unusual techniques that I use.
