âAny idea what that was all about?â Crease asked, as he watched them walk back to the lobby. âYou know the Lambert kid?â
Morrison said nothing.
âWhat about the other guy? Howie?â
âNot so much. Runs the Greenacres plant, I think. His familyâ¦I do know.â She squinted as if she were figuring something out.
Crease left it at that. It was about all he was going to get out of the detective on the matter, he could see that.
Morrisonâs cell rang. The ringtone was all business. âIâve got to take this,â she said, moving away a few steps.
Crease stood his ground. He wanted to talk to Morrison about a number of things, and if he walked away now heâd lose her to the crowd.
âCan someone explain why theyâve got packs that look like they could take out half a block? Iâd love to hear an explanation for that,â she said into her phone. Morrison did nothing to suppress her voice, or the anger it held. âI understand that, sir, butâ¦â
A pause. Morrison walked in a circle and looked at the ceiling tiles.
âYou want to take that risk? With McCartney? Are you kidding?â
Another pause. Morrisonâs neck turned purple. She rubbed it.
âWho did that order come from? Jesus. What the hell do they want in Weaver?â
Morrison looked at Crease and rolled her eyes.
âWe have an ETA? Okay and until thenâ¦rightâ¦butâ¦McCartneyâ¦â She covered the mouthpiece and let out a long exhale. âYes, sir.â She ended the call.
âDickwad,â she said, tapping the keys on her cell. She held the phone back to her ear. âJarett, you want to come down to the staff lounge? I need to tell you something.â
âI guess that call didnât go quite how you wanted,â Crease said. It wasnât a question. He already knew the answer.
A minute later, Detective Jarett reached them.
âWhat are those assholes doing now?â Morrison asked.
Jarett shook his head. âDoing what they do best. Being assholes.â
âOkay. Looks like weâre here as backup and support for McCartney and his circus.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means we get to do whatever he tells us to do.â
âGreat.â
âI better go, itâs notâ¦â Crease started.
âYou stay with us,â Morrison said. âYou know what weâre dealing with better than any of us, and a hell of a lot better than McCartney.â
âIâm not sure what I can do to help.â
âNeither am I,â Morrison replied, âbut I feel a lot better having you around, Mr. Crease.â
âJust Crease.â
âSo, weâre babysitting?â Jarett said. âAll that training and weâre on crowd control.â
âFor now,â Morrison said. âBut we all know how McCartney operates and I guarantee you this, weâll be pulling his ass out of the fire, probably literally, before the CDC arrive. The guys who actually know what theyâre doing.â
âETA?â Jarett asked.
Morrison shrugged. âTheyâre coming all the way from Atlanta. Weaver suddenly got important.â
âWhat the hell? Why not just send for the guys over in Benfield? They do squat most of the time anyway. They might enjoy a little trip over here.â
âGovernmentâs twitchy,â Morrison said. âHave been since Dead Crow. They donât want another one of those on their hands.
