Chapter 4

“You really didn’t have to snap at her like that, Colin. She was very upset… and she’s right. It was very unprofessional to even begin raising your tone.” Allen says, sirens blaring as he makes his way over to the crime scene. His tires screech against the road, swerving past a couple of cars in the way. Downtown New York isn’t easy to navigate.

Colin looks out the window, Scout in the back and on the floor while Colin sits in the front. “Sorry… it just pissed me off is all…” He grumbles, sitting back against his seat. “She was bothersome… and if I knew she was a preacher of sorts… I wouldn’t have said anything…”

“And that still gives you no right to make a scene about anything,” Allen says to him. “She was the only witness who stepped forward, and we were lucky she did that…”

“And we already have all the evidence she already gave us. She wasn’t a help whatsoever. So, all in all, she had nothing for us…”

“And what the hell is your point, Fowler? Nothing changes the fact that you yelled at someone who was trying to make things right… She was terrified when she left the room…”

Colin nods and sighs. “I’m sorry, okay… I know this doesn’t change things… but I didn’t have any sleep last night, and the fact that that billboard is gone is really ticking me off… I was closer than I am now, and still, then I was nowhere.” He says almost to himself, Allen looking over at him for a split second. He sighs. “Listen, son, we’re all tired, and we all want out of this. I understand where you’re coming from, and that she also had no reason to speak to you the way she did, but just… let me do the talking next time.”

Colin nods and closes his eyes.

Allen chuckles. “Don’t fall asleep just yet. We’re almost there.” He mentions, turning a corner. “It’ll look like a truly bloody battle, or at least that’s what I heard. Supposedly the sight is worse than most that we’ve seen.”

Colin nods with his eyes still closed. “Wouldn’t surprise me… they said there was an explosion, and explosions mean limbs flying away and through the air. Disgusting, but just how it works.”

Allen nods in his own little bubble. “Anyways, I’ll wake you when we get there, Sleeping Beauty. No need to worry.”

Colin cracks an eye open. “I’m not sleeping. I’m simply resting my eyes.” He mutters.

“Okay. Well, in that case, we’re five minutes away.” Allen says before pausing. “Oh, by the way… I meant to ask you, how is staying with the brothers? They’re nice, aren’t they?” Allen asks, almost proud.

Colin shrugs. “They’re interesting, I guess. I mean… the younger one is nicer than his counterpart… I met him at the dog park, and he talked up a storm. I swear I learned his whole life story with that single conversation.”

Allen laughs. “Yes, he can talk forever if you let him. Really sweet kid, though.
