I had my laptop opened and was in the process of pulling up some details regarding the recent wave of missing fourteen-year-olds in Savannah when I heard Maddie knocking and calling through the door, “Yo, Sloane. It’s me! Open sesame.”

I hustled to the door, opened it, and gestured for her to enter. “Hey, keep it down, will you? It’s late.”

“Oooh, sorry.” She pointed to the laptop. “You started without me?”

“Just getting warmed up. Trying to get some idea of what we’re looking at with these teens. I figured I’d start about two months ago and pull up the info on every missing person, regardless of age or gender. From there, we pick out just the fourteen-year-olds, see if the slimeball is focusing just on that age group.”

“If we can find a pattern, that right there will be a clue.”

I clicked and scanned and clicked and scanned. “Though I’m sure law enforcement has already done this.”

“Yeah, but like you told Grady, sometimes you see things that even the best of investigators don’t.”

At times, I had a way of getting into the nooks-and-crannies of a case—seeing things from a different perspective maybe than the FBI and other law enforcement personnel. And then other times, I felt like I was freefalling down a tunnel …

Speaking of tunnels … I handed Maddie a notebook and pen, then grabbed my laptop. “I need you to be the secretary.”

She nodded, and I pulled up the window and maneuvered my way onto the balcony. Maddie followed close behind, and we looked around, grinning at our good fortune. Tonight, we had the balcony all to ourselves, leaving us alone to pursue our sleuthing endeavors.

We settled into our rockers, and I set the laptop on the nearby table, pulling it closer. I typed in what I wanted to search and said, “Okay, here’s a list of all the missing persons in the last two months in the city of Savannah.”

“What if this recent outbreak of missing teens isn’t secluded to Savannah, though? Maybe these missing teens comes from other areas too.”

She was right, but for now, we needed to stick to our area and start small. We could always expand our search later.

“Let’s focus on the kids from around here for the moment,” I said.

“Okay, what do you want me to write down?”

I scanned the pages for results. “I can’t believe how many people have gone missing in just the last couple of months in Savannah.” I went back to the top and counted just the fourteen-year-olds. “Okay, in total, it looks like there are twenty-five people, age fourteen that have been reported missing. And just two of them are deceased.”

“Missy and Thad?”

“Yep, and it looks like five have returned home. Runaways, I’d guess, who were either found or came home of their own volition.” I narrowed the list to active missing persons cases. “Okay, here we go. You’ll be writing down just the ones who are still missing.”

I rattled off the first and last names of eighteen teens at our target age.
