A study published in Health Psychology in 2009 showed that participants who exhibited signs of depression and were isolated from social interactions had a low HRV. However, when they were engaged in face to face interactions with their partners, friends, or family members, their vagal parasympathetic response and HRV increased. This goes to demonstrate that having a face to face social interaction would improve the functioning of your vagus nerve while a lack of social interaction points to an underperforming vagus nerve.
