Chapter 8

The next day, Ma cooked a large breakfast and everyone took turns coming downstairs for a plate. Special Agent Bradley, an older man with who’d been waiting for our arrival at the safehouse the day before, seemed to linger longer than the others did, engaging her in conversation. It’d been a long time since I’d heard the light tinkling of her laugh. I sat in the corner, trying to remain inconspicuous, so I could watch. Unsure of the feelings inside volleying for supremacy, I decided to wait and see which one felt right. Jealousy fought hard against delight at seeing her smile. I’d been the center of her focus for a long time and as much as it shamed me, I enjoyed it. A tingling sensation shot down my spine. I straightened.

“Austin Gray 007.” I activated the recorder. The sighting zoomed to a sunlit house or maybe it was a condo—all I saw were the light-colored interior walls. I sensed it was a well-cared-for residence. The door opened and a tall black woman entered, threw her keys on the smoke-colored marble table in the foyer.

For a moment I froze, from behind this woman could’ve been Brianna. When she turned, I released a pent-up breath. Forcing myself to continue past the initial panic, I spoke the visuals of the potential victim and her surroundings.

“Black woman entered room from front door wearing long-sleeved gold-colored wrap-around dress, low cut up top, reaching mid-thigh. Height: five-six, or seven, statuesque build, large breasts, small waist, high hips and long legs. Complexion: milk chocolate. Hair: thick, straight, brushing middle back, part mid-front, swept to the side. Lighter brown strands throughout dark hair.”

I need to see her face.

“Heart-shaped face with high cheekbones, full lips, lower slightly larger than upper, dimple in left cheek, long eyelashes and light brown eyes.”

She shook her hair, as she walked into another room her purse on her shoulder. “Woman is walking into her bedroom, brown and yellow walls, with modern art. Two dressers, one with mirror the other chest.”

I want to see items on top of dresser.

“On top of dresser, a black shiny makeup kit, black wide tooth comb and red and black leather book. Could be phone book or diary.”

Show me the woman and the room.

“She’s sitting on a king-sized bed, humming a song while she pulls off her gold and back striped high heels. She’s unwraps her dress and pauses. Head down, her hand reaches inside her purse.”

Get me closer, I need to see what she’s doing.

I have a view directly above the bed. “It looks as though she’s pressing something.”

Closer.

“It looks like she’s handling two things, I can’t be sure, but her hand just trembled. I think she suspects something.”

My heart raced. Knowledge of an imminent threat invaded me. “Someone is in the room. They’re hiding, waiting.”

I need to see if she has any identifying marks or tattoos.

She shook her shoulders and the top half of the dress fell to the bed. “She’s wearing a gold-colored bra. Above her hips lay a tattoo of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland.
