CHAPTER FOUR

Candy and I talked for a short while before I could tell she was getting antsy. I left the room with her and we both went outside. Jake was nowhere to be found and a lot of people were asleep on the floor, tables, and everywhere else.

“Where is your boyfriend?” She asked, trying to sound as casual as possible.

“Why are you asking me?” I retorted with a smile. “I was in the house with you. He’s probably in the room, I guess.” I walked to the room while Candy randomly walked about checking on her men. I assumed she was looking for who was still awake because she kept calling their names. While opening the door, I saw Jake come out from the road that led to the back where the kitchen was. I wondered what he was doing there, and I could tell Candy did too.

“Hey, where you been, Jake?” She asked.

“Just been popping a few shots out back. I think only Gary is still semi-conscious if you know what I mean.” He replied and they both chuckled. “Anyways, I wanna really thank you for always taking care of me whenever I come here. This place is a nice escape from everything I have to go through outside.”

"Sure, kiddo. Anytime." Jake left and followed me to the room. I waved Candy good night and got inside. Checking my wristwatch, I could see that the time was 12:14 am. Candy and I talked for much longer than I thought we did.

“So, how was it?” I asked curiously. “I tried to stall her for as long as I could but ended up, oddly, enjoying the conversation.

“Oh, that’s good. She wouldn’t suspect a thing, then.” Jake mused, taking out his phone and plugging his earpiece in. “What did you two talk about?”

“Just life and business. Stuff like that.” I looked at the phone. “What about you?”

“Hear this.” He said giving me one of the ears of the earpiece. I placed it on my ear and waited for him to press play.

“Oh, yeah. We’ll cut that bitch up and sell her to the highest bidder. You feel me?” A voice that sounded like one of her men said, causing me to crumple the space between my eyes. “They are all over the world, man. These people crazy! Liver, kidneys, spleen, intestines, muscles, all that shit. Some’ll even ask for a heart.”

“Fuuuuck! You’re messing with me man.” Jake’s voice responded.

“Oh, no, man. We got them everywhere. Big people in high places!”

“Alright, alright. Enough talk. Let’s driiinnnk!" I thought Jake was smart to have stopped it there before the guy got self-aware of what he was saying and attacked. I don't really know if confessing under the influence of alcohol is admissible in a court of law but it sure as hell helps. The fact that the guy mentioned friends in high places did unsettle me. What if we went this far and someone threw it under the bus or quickly silenced us because of what that could mean for them.
