The Art Exhibition

The day of the exhibition had arrived. Madame Ramona had perfectly organized the event. Everything was ready. Santiago, Sebastian, and Doña Alba arrived an hour early. As they entered the exhibition hall, Doña Alba noticed something weird about Santiago that she hadn’t noticed back home. He was wearing a very large painter’s coat, much larger than his size. The sleeves covered his hands.

“Dear, didn’t you find a coat of your size?” Doña Alba was very surprised.

“Honestly grandma, I feel more comfortable with a coat larger than my size,” Santiago answered hesitantly.

“You have been acting weird this week. I wonder what is wrong with you.” The old woman gave her grandson an inquisitive look. Then her attention was drawn by the distant voice of Madame Ramona. “Let me check if Madame Ramona needs anything from me,” she added.

“Yes, go ahead, grandma and take your time. Don’t worry about me, I will be just fine,” Santiago felt some relief. His grandmother’s excessive inquiry was stressing him out.

As Doña Alba walked away from Santiago, Sebastian joined him.

“Are you sure this will work?” Santiago questioned. Then he added angrily, “What will people say about me when they see me wearing this coat?”

“Being thought of as a crazy but talented boy is better than being thought of as a liar, dear brother,” Sebastian answered sarcastically. “You have to trust me. Remember, I am five minutes older than you.”

The large coat was not merely a mistake. It had an essential role in the implementation of Sebastian’s plan. In the right sleeve of the coat, there was a small pocket where Colorie was hiding. When Santiago would have to paint, he would place his right hand with the brush on the palette and pretend that he was choosing the color of the paint. The eight flowers were arranged on the palette, in a way that made them look like paints on it. That’s when Colorie would sap some nectar from the flower whose color he wanted to convert to. When Santiago would place his hand on the canvas to paint, Colorie would fly to the canvas while staying in the sleeve and paint by himself. And while Santiago moved back and forth between the palette and canvas, Colorie would return to the pocket in the sleeve and stay there. The plan seemed perfect. It’s the implementation that worried Santiago.

All the attendees were amazed by the different paintings at the exhibition. But mostly, they were intrigued by the one he did in front of them. An art critique approached Santiago and said, “Mr. Mendez, allow me please to congratulate you for your extraordinary talent. You are absolutely gifted.”

“Thank you, Sir.” Santiago answered timidly.

“Thank you, Sir.” Sebastian answered after him.

The critique looked at Sebastian condescendingly and added, “He must be your brother.”

“He is also my agent and my right hand.” Santiago stressed.

“Very interesting. I love the brotherhood bond and support that exist between the two of you. If I may, Mr. Santiago, there is a burning question I would like to ask you.
