New York, Here We Come

I’d always wanted to go to New York and explore the city, but now I was having serious second thoughts about my daring detective adventure. I wasn’t prepared to find Marcus. I didn’t have any spy gear, fingerprint analysis kits, or hidden cameras. I didn’t even have high-powered personal connections like Charlotte. All I had was my school backpack and a suitcase filled with clothes for each day of the week. That was as prepared as I could get.

Henry’s mom greeted us when we got off the plane at LaGuardia Airport. “Hi, kids. You two look a wreck. Did you sleep in those clothes? We’ll get you fed and washed up as soon as we get home.” Henry rolled his eyes but managed to do it with a smile.

When we reached the car, I sank into the plush leather seats in the back of Mrs. Marino’s BMW. As soon as we took off, I hung on for dear life. She sure knew how to swerve through traffic. Mrs. Marino drove with one hand on the wheel and the other on the horn. I wondered if she’d honk at a bug if it dared to splat on her windshield.

“We’re getting ready for the big fundraising dinner at our house, so there’s plenty of food,” she said. “Your father will be here for that tomorrow.”

“Do I have to go?” Henry asked.

“Yes, your father is up for reelection this year. You have to at least say hello to everyone. You know, make the rounds, small talk, and all that.”

“How long do I have to stay?” Henry asked.

“A couple hours and then you can go play your video games.” Mrs. Marino glanced in the rearview mirror. “You can come too, dear.”

“Thanks, but I didn’t bring anything fancy to wear.”

“That’s okay. My personal assistant, Randall, will find something. He’s an expert at that.”

Henry glanced back with an apologetic smile.

“Thank you. That sounds like fun,” I said.

After we got off the highway, I gazed out the window at the sidewalks crammed with people walking, talking, and looking at their phones. None of them were staring up at the tall buildings like I was.

I couldn’t help looking for Marcus among the faces on the streets, even if finding him was as likely as finding a needle on Planet Haystack. What would I say if I actually ran into him—“Hi, Marcus, remember me? I’m the one who gave you Tesla’s notebook. Well, you probably know that it’s a very rare, priceless artifact that could hold the secret to creating unlimited energy. Yeah, can I have that back?”
