Time and again, the gospels return to the theme of being worthy. Jesus says that we have to produce good fruit. He condemns the fig for not producing. He tells parables about lazy and good servants. Still, what does he mean spiritually?
Well, he means more than just doing good works. Neither is he talking about our ethical behavior. Instead, he is saying that the Spirit requires something of us. What that something is depends upon our individual situation, but we cannot proceed unless we convince the Holy Spirit that we are worth its gifts. We have to have something to offer in order to receive.
