Dear Diary,

Writing about my father’s story again, months after it happened, left me in a reflective mood for most of the night. Listening to “I Stay Away” by Alice in Chains on my Walkman, I felt both my father’s sense of isolation and my own. He’d spent most of his life now keeping his dark past hidden from me and had only shared it now to warn me about treading a similar path.

But the more I thought about it and listened to this song, the more I realised that I just couldn’t stay away.

He may wish to hide from who he truly was, and be desperate for me to do the same, but was that really what I wanted?

Anyway, it’s dawn now, and as I promised last night, here is what happened with the man in the Dead Place…

Dressed in baggy beige overalls, an overweight man with grey and patchy hair watched us from beside Katy’s lamp in the lounge.

I still had John’s head between my legs, so I prodded him, instructing him to come away.

‘What’s wrong?’ John asked.

I was too busy staring at the overweight man to answer John.

The watcher didn’t respond or move. I estimated him to be in his early fifties. I noticed he had a poker in his hand, which he’d picked up from the old fireplace behind him.

I thought of the old slasher movies I’d seen. This would work. Four teens murdered in the old farmyard with a poker. Interesting. Except this man was showing his face and not hiding behind a mask. Making it feel more real. More immediate. Definitely more exciting.

I shoved John away from me and swung my legs forward so I was sitting upright on the sofa rather than leaning forward. ‘Who are you?’ I asked the man.

John, who’d only just clocked what was going on, scurried backward, naked, over the arm of the sofa. ‘He’s got a spear!’ He crashed to the floor, pounced back to his feet, and then shouted at the top of his lungs, ‘Lucas, where are you? He’s got a fucking spear!’

‘It’s a fire poker, dickhead,’ I said and then stood. I held out my hands. God, how intriguing this was. I was naked, damp with sweat, drunk and stoned out of my mind, and finally, I was looking at a person who I’d been desperate to see for so long.

Beside me, John was pulling on his trousers. There were pounding feet on the landing above.

‘Lucas!’ John shouted again.

I glared at John, concerned he would scare this man away. ‘Shut the fuck up!’

Behind the strange man, Lucas came pelting down the open staircase. He was fastening his belt and didn’t have a shirt on.

I wondered where Katy was, but then switched my attention back to the enigma in front of me. His cold, still expression had yet to change. I pointed at my breasts. ‘Is this bothering you?’

He didn’t respond. I reached to the floor for my clothes. ‘I’ll dress.’

Lucas reached the bottom of the steps.
