Chapter Sixty Four

Tunnel No. 1, North Korea

Lee Ho Suk frowned as he examined the delicate lattice of cracks that had spread in the tunnel walls ahead of the advancing train. He lifted up his right arm towards the train's driver, who was only a dozen meters behind him, in a gesture the driver had grown to dread. It meant "Stop the train, and have the work crew leave the train and join me." This would be their fourth stop.

So far, to Lee’s surprise, there had been no complaints from Captain Yoon. Maybe he had finally understood the point that a tunnel collapse at this stage would spell disaster for his mission, not just for expendable prisoners.

As the work crew moved bracing materials into position with a speed helped by repeated practice, Lee couldn't help thinking about what would happen after they had the train in position to make the final race to the South after the explosion cleared the way. Would they still see any need for him or the other prisoners? Or would it be, he thought with a wry smile, truly the end of the line?
