Close Call

Nancy rushed to the closet and managed to get the door half-closed before the person walked into the room.

She stood very still, buried in suits and jackets, barely breathing. Her back was pressed painfully against a wall hook, but she was afraid to move on the chance that she might be heard.

“Now, where is that umbrella?” the person muttered. It was Sean.

Nancy heard his footsteps growing nearer. He was coming toward the closet! Nancy stiffened with fear.

Just then the phone began to ring. Sean grunted, then went to answer it.

“Yes? Gillian, where are you?” he asked gruffly. “At the gym down the street? Well, get back here and get changed. No, you can’t stick around for the aerobics class. We’ve got a lot of work to do. I’m on my way to the civic center now. Meet me there as soon as you can.”

He hung up and started for the closet again. Nancy held her breath. Just then Nancy heard him say, “Ah, here it is.”

A moment later he was out of the room. That was a little too close for comfort, she thought.

Nancy waited for a few minutes, just to be safe, then continued to search the room. She turned the light on in the closet and looked for Purrfect’s cage or any sign that the Persian had been hidden there. She found a round-trip plane ticket and a passport on top of the dresser, along with some magazines and a map of Chicago. Then she checked in the bathroom and under the bed. “Nothing,” she said with a sigh as she went to the door. Poking her head out, she looked up and down the hallway, to see if anyone had spotted her. No one was there.

When Nancy got off the elevator in the lobby, Gillian was just coming in. The young woman was wearing a tan jogging suit and tennis shoes, and her face was damp with perspiration.

“Nancy, what are you doing here?” Gillian whispered, glancing around nervously.

“I was looking for you,” Nancy replied. “It’s okay, Sean’s left.” She put her hand on Gillian’s elbow and led her to a sitting area. Once they were seated, Nancy said, “Do you carry matches?”

Gillian’s eyes widened in surprise. “That’s a funny question. The answer is no.”

“How about Sean?” Nancy asked.

Gillian frowned. “I suppose he might. I’ve seen him smoking a pipe from time to time.”

“Just one more thing,” Nancy continued. “About that clipping you gave me. What ever came of that charge? Was Sean found guilty of tampering with the cat food?”

Gillian shrugged apologetically. “I’m sorry, I actually don’t know. I just came across that article last week, and I haven’t had time to look into it. You see, I only started working for Sean a few months ago, so I don’t know much about his history.”

“I understand,” Nancy said.

“Still, it’s very suspicious, don’t you think?” Gillian remarked, smoothing back a lock of her curly brown hair. “I mean, doesn’t there seem to be some sort of connection between the Liverpool incident and Purrfect’s kidnapping?”

“I’m not sure yet.
