I AM NOT THE ONLY WOMAN to have won and lost a member of the SAS. I had never realised before Andy decided to leave me that there were so many ex-wives of SAS men. Many of them had left the Hereford area to start a new life away from the Regiment, in addition to the increasing numbers who could not wrench themselves away from the hot house of Hereford life.

Over the following two years I became good friends with a number of women, nearly all of them in their late 20s, who had married and had been dumped by their promiscuous young SAS husbands.

Without exception, all had tales to tell, mostly more

horrendous than mine. We would talk about the way they had been treated and, more importantly, how they had managed to come to terms with the breakdown of their marriages.

Some wives would become so distraught that they would be admitted to the Jenny Lind Psychiatric Wing of Hereford County Hospital. Within hours, most wives on the Patch and those living around Hereford would have heard the news and the poor woman’s marriage would be dissected down to the most intimate detail. And most wives would know in their hearts that the Regiment, the SAS lifestyle and the husband had all been responsible for the young woman’s predicament.

Shortly after I moved to Hereford I met Barbara, a dark-haired, well-built young woman with a sweet smile and a sharp tongue, who had been married to an SAS man for four years. They had two children under three years of age and I would see the family most weekends going off together to the supermarket. Barbara and her husband John seemed ideally suited. But one night over a Christmas drink she disclosed the panic she was feeling.

Barbara told me that before they had married, John, whom she had met while he was in the Parachute Regiment, had twice left her for a former girlfriend after they had become engaged. They had married when she became pregnant, but she knew that John didn’t really want to settle down. After the birth of their first child he had again left Barbara to return to his old flame, and she had managed for six months living alone in Hereford while he made up his mind about which woman he wanted to live with.

Eventually he had returned to her and, almost immediately, she became pregnant again. He walked out on her once more, but this time to live with a

different woman, a nurse who lived nearby. Barbara told me how she had to walk past the house which John shared with the nurse most days, and how desperate and humiliated she would feel knowing they were there together, his car parked outside for the world to see.

Her mother came to stay for a week so that Barbara could have some time off, away from her two young boys. One evening she went out with some of her former girlfriends and had too much to drink.
