White-feather Reservation

XVII. 2:50 PM

A rain was just starting to set in when Kage, Alexa, and McCulloch pulled off I-75 and onto the access road that led to the White-feather Reservation. It had been sunny all day, but in the space of about twenty minutes a wind had picked up and the high, scudding clouds had lowered to the advance thunderheads of a tropical rainstorm.

“It’ll be over before it begins,” McCullough opined upon seeing their faces when they pulled up outside a pair of large steel gates, where two tan and white pick-ups with ‘RESERVATION POLICE’ emblazoned on the side were already waiting for them.

Alexa and Kage had showered, had a quick lunch (courtesy of Big Joe’s, as he was the go-to for any fast food in Wade-Pleasance), but Alexa still felt a trifle uneasy about barreling onto the reservation and asking some pretty pointed questions about whether anyone fit the bill for a suspected serial killer.

Isn’t that precisely the sort of thing that would ramp up tensions between the natives and townsfolk? Alexa thought as McCullough waved to one of the big, native policemen half-opening the door to his truck and leaning out.

“This here is Officer Darren-James White-feather; he’ll be taking you on from here,” McCullough said, wandering over to the side of the car with an easy, loping gait before sharing a few words with the Reservation Police Officer.

Alexa looked at the man for a moment; he was large, looked like a bodybuilder, with short black hair and looking at the two FBI agents with a closed, unreadable expression.

“’Bout time you showed up too, huh?” Officer Darren-James said.

“What do you mean?” Alexa asked as they hopped out of the car, and the first fat plops of rain started to pour.

“I put in a report this morning. Attack on two reservation vehicles last night. Looks like some of your boys formed a posse, rode up here and torched some residents’ cars,” Officer White-feather said, after opening the door and beckoning them inside.

“What!?” Alexa blinked, shocked but not surprised. Her mind immediately ran to the gang of workers she had seen riled up last night, and which Kage had been trying to calm down.

“Now, Darren, don’t be like that. You have no idea what I’ve been dealing with out there; it’s been hell I tell you. We’ve got bodies mounting up left and right, and you know there’s only me and Wade…” McCullough explained as he cast a nervous look at the trees on either side of the road, which were starting to whip back and forth. It looked like a ‘gone before it happened’ tropical storm out here actually meant ‘would be absolute carnage for half an hour’ in Alexa’s opinion.

Darren-James grunted, his face just as unreadable as it had been when Alexa first saw him.

“Report’s on your desk. Should be. Look forward to catching who did it. You know things are getting bad again, Chief,” the officer said, giving a sharp nod to McCullough before he turned to his two new passengers.
