âSit still,â Jo said, as she slapped Danaâs fingers. âAnd relax your hands.â
Dana tried telling herself she wasnât rattled by either of Sherryâs revelations, but here she was in the makeup chair, still struggling to get herself into the right frame of mind for her show.
âWhat did you do to yourself?â Felicia said as she stared into Danaâs face. âEverything is swollen.â
âIâm an ugly crier.â
Felicia thought for a moment, then disappeared into the bathroom. She returned holding a wet washcloth. âLean back,â she ordered.
Dana did as she asked, expecting a warm, soothing compress that would help her relax. Instead, she was assaulted with an ice-water-drenched cloth.
âWhat the hell!â
âWe need to get down the swelling,â Felicia insisted.
âWhat were you crying about, anyway?â Jo asked.
Dana wanted to rip the torturous rag off her face, but she knew she looked like a grown-up Cabbage Patch doll, so she balled her fists to help withstand the cold. âDoesnât matter,â she muttered into the damp terry cloth.
âWhat did she say?â Felicia asked.
âI have no idea,â Jo said. âBut if Ari broke up with her, Iâm available.â
âItâs not about Ari,â Dana said.
âWhat?â Jo asked.
âI think she said sheâs going to a party,â Felicia translated.
âA party?â Jo said. âWhat party? The Christmas party?â
âThatâs not until next month,â Felicia said.
Jo clucked. âI heard they was going to cancel it because of...you know, Ivan.â
âNo, theyâre just moving it to Studio E. No more rooftop partiesâat least for a while.â
âIs that what you was talking about?â Jo asked Dana. âThe Christmas party?â
Dana took the towel off her face. âI didnât say anything about a party. I said itâs not about Ari.â
Felicia looked thoughtful as she took that in. âWell, thank god,â she finally said. âBut do me a favorâdonât do no more crying, at least until after the show. Iâm going to have a hell of a job making you presentable.â
âThe swelling usually goes down pretty fast,â Dana said.
âNot fast enough,â Felicia said, frowning. âItâll probably go away while youâre on the air. And you know whatâll happen? The foundation will stick into the fine lines on your face and make you look like a hag.â
âFine lines?â Dana said. She was aware she had themâeverybody did. But she didnât think hers would be an issue for several years.
âHigh-def can be a nightmare. But donât worry. I know what to do. Iâll airbrush your makeup today. Itâs a lighter coating and will give us less problems when your normal face comes back.â
For the next few minutes, Dana held still while Felicia applied a fine mist of foundation to her face. When she was done, the two experts stood back and assessed her.
âWhat do you think?â Felicia asked.
âNot too bad,â Jo said.
Felicia clucked. âBut not great.â
âCan I see?â Dana asked.
âShh, donât talk,â Felicia said. âAnd donât open your eyes for a few minutes. I need it to set.â
While Dana was waiting for her face to dry, the women launched into the latest company gossip, starting with the morning hostâs new Botox treatment, and circling back to Ivanâs murder.
