“Do take care, Devery. And good luck.” Gray stood to shake Max’s hand. “I have no advice when it comes to proposals of marriage.”

“I’m not proposing to anyone.” Max’s brain stuttered over the prospect. Inheriting a title had already upturned his life. He’d expected to put off marriage as long as he could. Though marriage to Emily seemed a different prospect altogether. He could easily imagine the pleasure of holding her, waking up with her, learning all her preferences and passions.

If only he was the sort of man who was ready for any of it, worthy of any of it.

“But you will go and speak to Lord Grisham? Sort this out, my friend.” Gray patted him on the back, and Max wasn’t sure if it was meant to be a sign of support or a desire to shove him out of the club.

“I will.” Once he’d decided on a course of action, Max hated delay. He’d been the same on the battlefield.

“You may trust in my discretion. I’ve heard no whispers about the Worthington ball, but that doesn’t mean the tale isn’t being passed among society’s drawing rooms as we speak.”

Max hadn’t even thought to consult a scandal sheet to discover if he and Emily had set off the sort of rumors she hoped for.

“What of this other man?” Gray asked as he walked with Max toward the club’s front door.

“Other man?” He’d never been a jealous sort, but as quick as a spark to dry tinder, the emotion burned just below the surface.

“The unsavory gentleman who’s pursuing Miss Cavendish.”

Max grimaced. He hadn’t spared a thought for Higgs. “I’ll deal with him later. First, I need to see Emily.”

“You need to see her father.” Gray’s face lifted in a smile. “But your eagerness to see Emily tells me you were quite transformed by that kiss.”

Had he been transformed? The feeling was more akin to being righted after teetering off-balance since inheriting his cousin’s title. He knew what he must do. He had a mission. A plan. That at least felt familiar.

And the chance of seeing Emily again? That prospect held more appeal than anything had in months.

Exiting the club, Max tipped his face up to soak up a bit of the sun’s heat.

A whoosh of air pushed against his chest, and he opened his eyes to find the irate face of Westing Cavendish inches from his own.

“Damn you, Devery.” Three words and a fist, flying at Max’s cheek.

Max feinted left, and Cavendish pitched off-balance. The young man landed in an inelegant heap on the club’s wide marble stairs.

“You’ve ruined my sister!”

Max leaned close and offered a hand. “Might want to avoid announcing that to all of Mayfair, old chap.”

Emily’s brother bolted upright, sweeping dust from his backside, and glowered at Max. “How could you?”

The question of the hour, apparently. “She asked me to.”

Cavendish went for Max’s throat before he ducked back, managing only to unsettle Max’s tie. “You dare blame my sister?”

“I am to blame.” He clenched his fist on instinct, but he had no desire to worsen the situation by striking the young man.
