Chapter Eighteen

‘AFTERNOON, DCI KIPLING.’

‘An update, Ward,’ Kipling said. ‘I have DC Norris and DS Metcalfe with me now.’

Ward glanced up—he hadn’t even realised that Norris had slipped out. David’s desk was in the corner, in a nook that gave him about as much privacy as anyone could have in a shared office. Metcalfe, Ward had assumed, was busy on the shitter, or in the canteen—the man made an event of everything entering or leaving his body, much to the grossing out of everyone there.

DCI Kipling had a cushy office upstairs, away from the busyness of their shared office. Ward preferred it that way, to be frank. None of them wanted the DCI breathing down their necks all day long—not one as unlikeable as Kipling, anyway.

‘Oh?’ Ward straightened, all thoughts of revenge on DC Patterson gone for the moment.

‘The shipment will be an accompanied load, driver coming through with it, and it docks in Liverpool tomorrow morning. We’ll be there to meet it. Full response from Liverpool’s CID and uniforms to lock down the vehicle as soon as it passes Customs, then it’s over to us to secure what we need from it.’

A spike of adrenaline shot through Ward at the prospect, electrifying him with anticipation and nerves. ‘What do you need from me, sir?’ He grabbed a pen and slid his notepad across the desk.

‘Everyone on board. I don’t care what shifts everyone’s supposed to be on tomorrow—cancel everything. Need the whole team in Liverpool for seven in the morning. Make the arrangements. I’ll brief here at four, we move out at five.’

Ward scribbled it all down. It would give them ample time to coordinate with Liverpool on the other end.

‘Metcalfe and Norris will give you all the pertinent details. Make it happen. See you at four tomorrow.’

The line went dead.

Ward stared dumbly at his phone for a moment. This was it, he realised. This was their chance—to catch Varga in the act, hopefully add evidence beyond weight, beyond avoidance to the case they had so slowly been scraping together. He stood slowly, rolling the chair out behind him.

Expecting a backlash, Jake already half hovered over his own chair, prepared to flee. His grin faded at the unnerving bleakness on Ward’s face.

‘Everyone.’ Ward’s loud voice stilled the office at once, and the DCs and DS Nowak all turned to look. ‘We have an update on the Varga case.’ He relayed Kipling’s instructions, that they were all to assemble for a briefing before the crack of dawn the next day, to take down the kingpin in the act.

As he finished, and strode out to find DS Chakrabarti and the other DCs in the Incident Room, which they had taken over with their burglary caseload, the office erupted in a furore behind him as his team took in the news that, finally, they would be going head-to-head with Varga’s operation.
