The Congress

Adena released an agonising groan. The scarlet fields were becoming increasingly reoccurring, sometimes as often as several times a week.

Walking through what she knew was only a meadow of illusion, she reached out and grabbed one of the vibrant poppies, but the petals instantly blackened and withered in her hand. Her dress was now ebony in colour, with long sleeves and a high neckline, as if she had dressed for a funeral. She was already crying, in anticipation of what was to come, but these were no regular tears. The warm liquid was thick and red, smearing on her hands as she attempted to wipe them away.

No longer did she want to turn around and watch the children as they disintegrated before her. Instead, she strode on, holding her gaze high as she looked up into the blue heavens.

There was thunder in the distance, dark clouds quickly gathering above.

Adena grabbed at her skirt, and started to run. She needed to get away from there – to escape the horrors of death. The Cardinal suddenly stumbled, falling forward into the tall grass. As she pushed herself up from the ground, she could see eyes peering at her through the blades of grass. She immediately reared back, scrambling to break away. Turning around, the nightmarish sight greeted her yet again; the children stood quietly in a long row.

All movement seized as an ominous silence settled.

The rain of blood ensued, drenching the field.

A small boy stepped forward from the line of children. His long hair was heavy and wet with claret. “The light of great deeds cannot overshadow the darkness of sins. Demonkind shall never forget. There is no forgiveness.”

Adena could not reply, as if a weight pressed against her constricted chest. There was no air to inhale, her conscience strangling her. She could no longer deny from where she recognised the children. Every single one of the boys and girls had died by her hand, either through her orders or by her own disgraceful sword.

And again they stood there in defiance, choosing to rather die than allow her to aid them.

A whirlwind formed around the children, tearing into them, whipping the crimson drops against their skin like razor-sharp pebbles. Mutilated corpses fell one by one, and soon the children were gone, their screams slowly fading away.
