Chapter Seven

For some reason, Jasmine had been expecting for Mason to take her back to the magic shop or to call his father. Instead, they looped back around into the busy section of town and stopped outside a clothing shop that had a giant closed sign on the front door. It looked like a thrift store.

“Why are we here?” She asked, jittery and nervous that the monster could find them at any moment.

Mason didn’t reply. He pressed his hand flat against the glass of the door and said, “Mason Anderson. For Saturn.”

“Saturn?” She asked, confused.

But he ignored her and kept his hand against the glass. Jasmine touched the amulet. It was still warm but hadn’t grown any hotter. The storm that she had heard earlier was closer now and the first rain drops had begun to fall.

The door opened with a soft click and Mason stepped inside, motioning for her to follow. With a final glance behind her, Jasmine followed him. He shut the door. There were racks of clothing and some jewelry on display.

She blinked, “Mason, why are we in a thrift store?”

“To see Saturn.” He replied impatiently.

“The planet?”

He didn’t reply, walking across the floor of the store and going behind the cash register. He tapped the wall directly behind it three times and it glided open. Jasmine stared in surprise as Mason walked up the steps that had appeared.

She hurried after him. The staircase was narrow and creaked under each step that she took. Mason didn’t seem to be nervous at all. He must have come here before. They reached a door which he opened.

“Thanks for letting me in.” He said to someone Jasmine couldn’t see yet.

A female voice replied, “What trouble have you gotten into, Mason, to come asking for a witch’s help?”

A witch? Jasmine thought, surprised, as she finally stepped into the room. A woman stood in the middle of the space, which was filled with soft lights and comfortable colors. Instantly, Jasmine’s earlier concerns faded and she felt relaxed. The Asian woman had bright purple hair which was pulled into a ponytail and was wearing pajamas covered in tiny cats. There was a large purple gem tied to a thin chain around her neck. Her most startling feature were her violet eyes, as bright as a neon sign.

“Oh, dear. You didn’t tell her, did you?” Saturn said, her voice sounding like music, as she hurried towards Jasmine, “Come sit down, dear.”

“Tell her what?” Mason asked.

“That there would be magic here. You can tell she hasn’t encountered a witch before. The magic is making her light headed.” Saturn explained.

Now that she mentioned it, Jasmine did feel a bit dizzy. There were candles lit on the coffee table and their heavy scents made her head feel woozy. This woman couldn’t be a witch. That didn’t make sense. Witches and magic weren’t real.

Neither are monsters, Jasmine thought, remembering the beast’s claws. Mason was talking urgently now but Jasmine couldn’t hear him. He sounded very far away. Her head rolled back against the couch.
