Merry…

Merry had heard nothing from Gregory since they had returned from the Van Hoosier estate. She had busied herself over the last day with going over the family trees she had made with Queen Charlotte while in Chester’s Wake. Earlier that morning she and Wesley had taken a walk around the cul-de-sac. They had spoken about Chester’s Wake, and Wesley had told her about the Rejected Homes there. He’d told stories of visiting the homes with Princess Roanna when she would make her monthly donations. He told her of the children who lived there, as well as the young adults who were either Terminated or set free upon reaching adulthood—all depending upon their condition.

The idea of the homes both fascinated and appalled Merry, and she determined to visit them when they returned to the northern kingdom. How did these children grow up knowing the uncertainty of their fate? Merry felt strongly related to their uncertainty.

The walk with Wesley had ended, and now she had nothing with which to occupy her time. She sat in the small parlor room, looking at a book without really reading it.

The rumble of an auto caught her attention. Wesley was already outside, and as was the usual routine, she expected them to converse for a few moments before Gregory would come inside.

But moments later the front door burst open, and Merry jumped in her seat. She stood and hurried to see what was happening.

Gregory stood in the entryway. Fire burned in his gaze. Red stained his cheekbones. His nostrils flared.

“There has been an attack at the palace here in Dawson’s Edge.” He spoke low but heatedly.

With horror she realized that he suspected she knew of this. Perhaps even believed her involved. She shook her head. “When? How?”

He stepped closer and clasped her upper arm. The pressure wasn’t enough to harm her, but it was certainly enough to frighten her. “They took Roanna.” His voice broke as he said his sister’s name, but the fiery look didn’t leave his eyes.

“I know nothing about it, Gregory. I swear it to you. I know nothing outside of what my own Papa arranged weeks ago. My involvement is over. I am committed to helping you.” She had nothing to convince him but her own word. Would it be enough?

But he didn’t release her arm. “How can I trust you when you withhold information at will?”

Fear wrapped around her like a claw, but she didn’t fight him. “What are you talking about?”

He kept her gaze another beat then looked to his own hand still holding her arm. He released her as if just realizing what he was doing. He paced away, and she watched as he took several deep breaths.

“Henri Van Hoosier is your cousin. Hattie Van Hoosier is your cousin. You did not feel this was relevant to share?” He shook his head. “I am not a fool. You knew you should share it but didn’t, which tells me you are not wholly committed to helping me, as you said.
