XIX. 5:05 pm, The Offer

“No!” With a grunt of exasperation, Kage turned and kicked one of the empty shelving cabinets in the abandoned room, for it to skid across the bare concrete floor with a terrible screech.

“Yeah, thanks for that,” Alexa said as her nerves jangled. Not that she could really find fault in his outburst.

The hostages were gone. They had clearly been here, and there was even still some heavy-duty black tape still frayed around the chair legs, but of the victims, there was no sign.

“Well, this is a crapshoot,” Detective Dempsey announced after following them down the stairs. “I guess we get forensics in here. I’ll send the officers out to ask around the other businesses, see if they saw anything,” he grumbled, then turned and loudly called for the tactical squad to stand down and that they were free to go.

“Forensics is going to take forever,” Alexa groaned, turning to glance at her watch.

Oh no.

5:13 pm

“It’s gone,” she whispered, half to herself, but heard the low, enraged growl from Kage on the other side of the room.

“BOLO,” Alexa said immediately, turning back to where Dempsey was already halfway up the narrow concrete steps. He turned around, flustered.

“An all-unit alert on every Proton Deliveries van; if we can get it out now then maybe there’s a chance a traffic cop, or a highway, or state sheriff might see them out there.”

A part of Alexa knew that it was already too late, but she knew that she had to do something. Anything. This was going down now, and if they were lucky, really lucky…

Dempsey opened his mouth as he grabbed at his radio, but right at that moment, Alexa’s phone started to ring.

“It’s Chief Williams,” she said, seeing his name on the caller I.D.

“Chief, what is it? I’m at the site, we found it, but…”

“Never mind, Agent Landers. Tune into that radio show of yours. The annoying one. The killer has just gone live not ten seconds ago!” The chief’s voice was tight as he didn’t wait for confirmation, but hung up as Alexa swore, clicking through to her mobile radio app to where she had saved the Harry Berkowitz’s show.

“The Revenge is live on Harry Berkowitz. We can’t get over there, whatever he’s done…” she relayed as suddenly the over-loud, tinny voice of Harry’s Hour of Power burst into the small room.

“...so you are saying to me what, that you’ve killed three people? C’mon, man, you can’t be coming on here and saying that…”

Even the unshockable Harry Berkowitz was apparently shockable, as Alexa wished that she had heard the first part of the conversation. She kicked herself because she should have known that the Revenge would seek notoriety again, wouldn’t he? That was what Doctor Wells had said. Public crimes, public recognition.

“You’re not listening to me, Harry,” that light, definitely creepy voice sounded once again over the line, always with that small pause between the words.
