He said: ‘If you follow me, you are not to ask me about anything until I make mention of it to you.’ [18:70]
So they set off, and once aboard a ship, he scuttled it.
He said: ‘Do you scuttle it to drown its passengers? You have done a terrible deed!’
He said: ‘Did I not tell you that you cannot endure my company?’
He said: ‘Take me not to task for what I forgot, and do not overburden me with difficulties.’ [18:73]
So they set off until, meeting with a youth, he killed him.
He said: ‘Did you kill an innocent soul, and not in revenge for another? You have done an execrable deed!’
He said: ‘Did I not tell you that you cannot endure my company?’
He said: ‘If I ask you about anything hereafter, deny me your company, for you have reached the limit of forgiveness with me.’ [18:76]
So they set off until, reaching the people of a town, they begged its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. In it they found a wall about to collapse and he repaired it.
He said: ‘Had you wished, you could have obtained a wage for it.’
He said: ‘Here then is the parting of ways between me and you. I shall tell you the interpretation of what you could not endure.
‘Regarding the ship, it belonged to poor people working in the sea, and I wanted to make it defective; beyond them was a king who seized every ship, unlawfully.
‘As to the youth, his parents were believers, and we feared he might overburden them with his arrogance and blasphemy. So we wished that their Lord would give them in exchange one more pure than him in character, and more caring towards his kin.
