The next morning, they were woken from their comfortable slumber by the sounds of breakfast being prepared.

Tobias stretched and yawned and turned to see Quinn doing the same.

‘I’m happy we’re here and there are other people on the island,’ said Quinn.

‘Me too,’ agreed Tobias. ‘I was worried that we wouldn’t ever find anyone else.’

‘What do you think will happen to us now?’ Quinn asked.

‘I don’t know. I would like to get home and see my family. It’s been a long time. You are lucky, Quinn. Shera is so excited that you’re here. I guess she has no other children and losing you would have been heartbreaking. A family is a family, whether you’re born into it or if they take you in and love you. There are lots of people who have no one, like Finian, who lost his wife and child.’

‘I didn’t know that,’ Quinn said.

They were beautifully decorated with colourful material draped over the walls and ceiling.

After a short time, they heard a number of male voices coming from a path near the beach. Tobias watched as the children ran towards their fathers and brothers to welcome them.

A group of about ten men and boys rounded the corner with the younger children hanging off them. The local men were between Tobias’s age and that of an man who seemed about a hundred years old. They were dressed in only a cloth wrapped around their waist and each was fit, with clearly defined muscles. Even the old man was in great shape, though his skin sagged a little bit. The men carried large branches between them from which two small, feral pigs and several different types of fish were hanging. The villagers chatted excitedly amongst themselves when one of the men noticed Tobias and Quinn. He suddenly stopped talking and the rest turned to see what he was looking at.

‘Degare,’ the man said quietly then turned to look at Shera with his eyes opened wide. Shera nodded, took him by the hand and led him to where Quinn was standing.

The man stared at Quinn for a moment before grabbing him in a huge hug, much like Shera did. He spun Quinn around so that the boy’s feet left the ground. They turned so many times
