Josh Allen—surprised me, in a good way

Josh Allen, the seventh overall pick by the Buffalo Bills, came out of Wyoming with eye-popping physical skills, but completions under 60 percent and a 1-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio—two worrisome omens. But second-year head coach Sean McDermott was totally on board with Allen. And the team was totally on board with McDermott. That would prove to be a critical plus.

As the season started, the Bills and McDermott showed un-NFL-like restraint and did not start Allen in the opener, instead going with fifth-round pick Nathan Peterman. It was probably one of the few examples of when the team should have started the rookie. Overmatched Peterman was blown out of the game by the Ravens, 47–3. Having shown restraint and failed miserably, the Bills put Allen into the game, way too late to do anything except show that he was now the starter.

Allen then started eleven games for the Bills where they went 5-6, completing only 52 percent of his passes and throwing 10 TDs to 12 INTs, a negative ratio—ouch, the omens came true! (In fairness, Allen’s pickoffs were second in his draft class to Josh Rosen’s, a case where finishing first is not an honor.) Allen did have one especially good game, beating the Vikings with good passing and thirty-nine yards on the ground. Allen was injured a few weeks later and missed part of the season. He came back as the starter—another team all in on their young hope—but the Bills’ fate didn’t change much and they finished at 6-10. What did we learn? The Bills team is not good. But we knew that. Allen may be good if/when the Bills get better. But we knew, or hoped, that too.
