As with the muscle-up on the pull-up bar, the false grip is used on the rings to aid control. The next picture shows the false grip on the rings (this is a slightly different hand position than for the pull-up bar false grip).
False Grip on the Rings
As you can see, the hand is positioned at an angle, which allows part of the wrist to rest on top of the ring. This is very important, as it allows an easier transition from the pull-up to the dip. When you first start to work with the false grip you will find it very awkward. It is not a natural position for the hand or wrist to be in, and it will always feel a little bit uncomfortable. The best way to increase strength in this position is to perform bodyweight rows and pull-ups using the false grip. This will develop the ability to hold the rings in the correct way whilst building pulling strength.
