Once there lived a homeless dog. It managed to live eating vegetables or even blades of grass unlike other dogs who feasted on human flesh in cemeteries. Since he was a pious and noble dog, the other stray dogs approached him and said, 'Sir, you're like a father to us. Please become our chief and protect us like your children.' The dog agreed to be chief and went about his duties righteously.

One day, the harness used for the royal chariots was left lying in the palace courtyards. That night it rained making the leather soft and chewy. The king's pack of hounds found it and tore it up. Finally they swallowed it.

The next morning, when the palace attendants found the harness missing, they were terrified. They told the king, 'It's the fault of all those stray dogs who enter our grounds. They have become a terrible nuisance, Your Majesty.'

The king was very angry that his harness was spoilt, so he ordered all the stray dogs to be killed. When they heard this, the dogs ran to their chief quaking in fright. 'Don't worry,' he said, 'the king has been told lies. We will tell him the truth.'

He led his pack through the streets and to the palace. The palace guards and attendants stood speechless as the dogs went past them and into the king's court.

Standing before the king, the chief dog spoke in a human voice, 'We have been wrongly accused, Your Majesty. Give us a chance to prove our innocence.'
