Managing Projects in the Twenty-First Century

I have found that creating work breakdown structures and network diagrams with project delivery teams can be an excellent team-building experience. It allows the team members to get to know each other before the real work starts. The best way of running these planning meetings is to ask each person to write tasks on sticky notes and start putting them up on a wall. Then they can start to work together to organize the notes into work breakdown structures and network diagrams.

The sticky-note method makes it easier for each team member to contribute than if one person inputs the data into a computer. Once the team has finished the plan, the Project Manager can then transfer the data to planning software.

These types of planning meetings also have some other useful benefits. The team will be more likely to trust and follow the plan, simply because they created it. Each team member can quickly see how his or her work links to other people’s work. Finally, everyone can see how his or her tasks, no matter how small, contribute to something bigger and more important.
