Two essential surveys of the media in modern Ireland are John Horgan, Irish Media: A Critical History Since 1922 (London: Routledge, 2001) and Chris Morash, A History of the Media in Ireland (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010). The best account of the birth and development of RTÉ is found in Robert J. Savage’s Irish Television: The Political and Social Origins (Cork: Cork University Press, 1996) and A Loss of Innocence: Television and Irish Society 1960–72 (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2010). John Bowman’s Window and Mirror, RTÉ Television: 1961–2011 (Cork: Collins Press, 2011) is a fascinating account benefiting from his historian’s eye and insider’s knowledge as one of the station’s most respected current-affairs broadcasters.

Mark O’ Brien has written the definitive histories of two major Irish newspapers: The Irish Times: A History (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2008) and The Truth in the News: De Valera, Fianna Fáil and the Irish Press (Dublin: Irish Academic Press, 2001). He has also edited with Kevin Rafter a collection on Ireland’s most commercially successful media group, Independent Newspapers: A History (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2012). Some recent memoirs have provided insights into the social history of Irish journalism. Andrew Whittaker’s collection on Douglas Gageby, Bright, Brilliant Days: Douglas Gageby and The Irish Times (Dublin: A & A Farmar, 2006) is full of suggestive gems. And though much concerned with institutional politics, two memoirs by senior Irish Times executives—Conor Brady, Up with The Times (Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, 2005) and James Downey, In My Own Time: Inside Irish Politics and Society (Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, 2009) are good on Irish journalism and politics more generally. Both Michael O’ Toole, More Kicks than Pence: A Life in Irish Journalism (Dublin: Poolbeg Press, 1992) and John Waters, Jiving at the Crossroads (Belfast: Blackstaff Press, 1991) have written nonfiction bildungsromans about the journey from provincial Ireland to a metropolitan media life.
