CHAPTER ONE

PRINCESS LUCIA BAGATON—known to those she loved as Cia—anchored a wisp of glossy hair behind her ears and replaced her sunglasses, her fine brows drawing together in a faint frown. Automatically her fingers went to the diamond star that rested just below the hollow of her throat. She stroked the pendant as though it was a talisman, then realised what she’d done and dropped her hand to her lap with a tightening of her lips.

Although this meeting wasn’t an official occasion, she’d dressed conservatively; Hunter Radcliffe was an important figure in the business world as well as a friend of her cousin’s new wife, Alexa.

In fact, Cia thought, fighting back the grey misery that had been her constant companion for months, the last person she’d met at the airport had been Alexa, now Princess Alexa of Dacia.

That meeting had changed Cia’s life; this one wouldn’t, but it was the last time she’d greet anyone as Luka’s representative. A week from now she’d be flying away from the island, the only home she’d known since she was ten.

‘We’re here, your highness.’ The chauffeur’s voice murmured respectfully through the intercom as the limousine drew up in a private parking place out of the view of any travellers or passers-by.

‘Thank you.’

Before the car stopped she’d relaxed her taut expression; the Dacians expected smiles from her. Bag clasped loosely, she waited for the elderly attendant to open the door, returned his smile and walked into the airport building.

In the private lift that led to the waiting room reserved for Dacian royal family, she asked the airport manager, ‘Is Mr Radcliffe’s jet on schedule?’

‘It will touch down in a few minutes, your highness.’

‘Good.’ Another smile lilted through her words. ‘Excellent, in fact. How is the new grandson?’

He looked gratified. ‘A lovely little boy. And so forward! Yesterday he smiled at me—and even though my wife and daughter tell me he’s far too young, it was not wind! I know the difference between a grimace of pain and a smile.’

Walking ahead of him out of the lift, Cia laughed. ‘He must already realise that he’s a lucky baby—he has a special link with his grandfather.’

She loved children. Sometimes, in the dead of another sleepless night, she mourned the children she’d never have now. Once again her hand crept to the pendant at her breast and touched the five exquisite stones that made the star. They were cold and smooth against her fingertips. Once again she dropped her hand abruptly.

The manager opened the door into the suite with a flourish. ‘Well, perhaps he’s a little young for that,’ he conceded with a half-laugh. ‘I trust everything is as you wished it, ma’am.’

Cia cast a professional glance around the room. ‘It looks wonderful, as always. Thank you.’

He nodded, then looked past her out of the window. ‘Ah, this must be the gentleman,’ he said with satisfaction as a slender private jet touched down on the runway. ‘He is a friend, I believe, of Princess Alexa’s?’

‘Yes. Like her, he is from New Zealand.
