Stewart had sent messages to both his paymasters that morning. The second was to Agent M: were his associates willing to pay more? Walking from the river to his lodgings in the Marais he considered the possibilities, because Knight’s tune was changing. He had implied at first that they were working for the same people. Not a bit of it: he was desperate to thwart Fletcher. ‘Don’t let him acquire the letters, Dick, whatever you do!’ he said. And how was Dick to prevent that? ‘Pinch them from her, of course!’ And Fletcher … Fletcher wanted him to do the same. One of them was trying to save Mac, the other trying to screw him. Stewart was Knight’s spy, so perhaps a little loyalty was due: twelve pounds a week’s worth of loyalty. But if he followed the logic of the marketplace it would be Fletcher, because Fletcher was paying fifteen. Only, Knight was not a forgiving man, and what about the next time he needed a job? The daft thing, the very daft thing, the mad thing … it seemed like a decision that could affect the future of the country for years to come.

Frenk heard Stewart in the hall of his pension and stepped out of his office. ‘Monsieur Dumont; a lovely day.’

One would hardly know in the perpetual twilight of the half-shuttered hall.

‘Indeed it is, Monsieur.’

‘Please wait, I have a message for you.’ He shuffled into his office and returned a moment later with a carte bleue, which he waved above his head like a child with a flag on Bastille Day. ‘A job perhaps?’

‘Perhaps. Thank you, Monsieur.’ Stewart carried the card out to the steps of the pension. It was from a bloke called ‘Seed’.

M has sent me to assist. Request meeting soonest.

Resident at the Cosmos, Place de la Contrescarpe.

Stewart lit a cigarette and drew deeply. Seed. Seedy. Mr Seedy. He had an uneasy feeling that Mr Seed represented just the sort of trouble that had been playing on his mind since his meeting with Fletcher by the Seine.
