* This is the philosophy of eighteenth-century mystic Emanuel Swedenborg, who is explored in “ Appendix I : The Over-Soul: Inner Key to the Master Mind.”

* There were also serious controversies around the Oxford Group’s internal culture and leadership, which I consider in my book One Simple Idea: How Positive Thinking Reshaped Modern Life.

Think and Grow Rich: A Master Mind Way of Life

As I noted earlier, Think and Grow Rich is the foundation for many of the ideas in this book. Hill’s 1937 work is vital reading. It has probably touched more people than any other work of modern self-help. I have met artists, business people, doctors, teachers, athletes—people from different professions and possessed of seemingly different outer goals—who have attested that Think and Grow Rich made a decisive difference in their lives.

Try a small personal experiment: visibly carry a copy of Think and Grow Rich with you through an airport, grocery store, shopping mall, or any public place—and see if more than one person doesn’t stop you and say something like, “Now, that’s a great book …” If you do this more than once, you’ll be struck by the diversity of people who approach you.

Think and Grow Rich has sold many millions of copies around the world since its first appearance—but that is not the true measure of its success. Lots of books gain popularity for a time, but go unread, and sometimes unheard of, within a decade or so of their publication. But Think and Grow Rich has, if anything, grown in influence since Hill’s death in 1970. Its ideas are at the foundation of most of today’s philosophies of business motivation and personal achievement. More so, the book has given people a sense of their own veritable possibilities. It has provided readers with that rarest of gifts: realistic self-belief. It is a philosophy that uplifts the individual.

For these reasons, I am providing this chapter as a reliable digest of Think and Grow Rich, which can be used as a refresher by you and your Master Mind colleagues. It is not a substitute for the original, but it is a sturdy primer and reminder of the principles of this seminal work. Turn to it whenever you have questions on your Master Mind journey, or feel uncertain of your path.

As you read, or reread, these thirteen steps, always hold in mind how you can bring them in front of your Master Mind group for expansion and application. The Master Mind is the binding agent that holds together and amplifies your plans—indeed, you will see that several of these steps reference the Master Mind. Your group members will help you see and execute these steps from unexpected angles, and find new possibilities within them.

If you come across steps that you’ve previously neglected—or that need freshening (and we all have them)—write them down as special items to take up with your Master Mind partners. Here is Hill’s advice from Think and Grow Rich, with his emphasis in the original:

Every plan you
