Schleifer’s poem draws a poetic equation between something like Frank O’Hara’s “personism” and the compañerismo of revolutionary life. It converses casually with the protagonists of the revolution, and coolly connects to Cuban martyrology in the style of Fernández’s Libro de los héroes (1964). The only poem written by a US citizen in Randall and Mondragón’s Cuban dossier in El Corno Emplumado 7, it glamorizes the symbolic politics of Yankee fidelismo, but also prefigures a late-decade boom in US translations of militant verse. Schleifer’s utopian optimism diverges from Jones’s vision of the poet’s death in the machinery of American imperialism and contrasts the teleology of death in Javier Heraud’s guerrillero poetry with a casual prediction of revolutionary accomplishment, while its homosocial jouissance ignores Cuba’s emerging repressive policy toward homosexuals.
